How to apply for an IPO in Nepal

A step-by-step guide to applying for an IPO in Nepal through MeroShare: what you need before you start, how many kitta to ask for, and how to apply for several family accounts at once.

What you need before you apply

Applying for an IPO in Nepal happens through MeroShare, the CDSC portal linked to your demat account. Before an issue opens, make sure all of these are in place. Sorting any of them out after the issue opens can cost you a day.

  • A demat account with a depository participant (DP), which gives you a 16-digit BOID.
  • MeroShare login details: your DP, username and password.
  • A CRN from the bank linked to your demat account.
  • A transaction PIN set in MeroShare, and enough balance in the linked bank account.

Applying through MeroShare

Once the issue is open, the MeroShare flow is short but repetitive, which is exactly why it hurts when you manage more than one account.

  1. Log in to MeroShare with your DP, username and password.
  2. Open My ASBA and choose Apply for Issue, then pick the open issue.
  3. Choose the bank linked to your demat account and enter your CRN.
  4. Enter the number of kitta. For most IPOs for the general public the minimum is 10.
  5. Enter your transaction PIN, submit, and check that the status shows as applied.

How many kitta should you apply for?

When an IPO is oversubscribed, allotment in Nepal is effectively a lottery for the minimum lot. Applying for 100 kitta instead of 10 does not multiply your chance of being allotted, because in a heavily oversubscribed issue almost everyone who is allotted receives the minimum. It does multiply the amount blocked in your bank account until the result.

That is why many retail investors apply for the minimum from each eligible family BOID instead.

Applying for several accounts at once

Repeating the MeroShare flow five times on a phone, on a busy closing day, is where mistakes happen: a mistyped PIN, a skipped account, a session that expires halfway.

In SajiloShare you add each MeroShare account once. When an issue opens you select the accounts, pick the issue, set the kitta and apply. Every account is submitted in one run, with a result for each one showing which succeeded, which were already applied and which need a retry.

After you apply

The applied amount is blocked in your bank account, not debited, until allotment. When the result is published you can check it with your BOID. If you are not allotted, the bank releases the blocked amount.

Do all of this in one app

SajiloShare stores each MeroShare account once, applies for all of them in one run, checks every result together and shows your portfolio after charges and tax. Free on Android and iPhone.
